The Greater Kruger National Park is South Africa's best game destination and what better way to meet the wildlife within it than to spend three full days following in its tracks? The bush is full of animal sounds, but we suspect one of the loudest things you'll hear is your own heart beating as you edge closer to a herd of elephants resting in the shade!
You start with a stay in a hotel in a smart suburb of Johannesburg where, if your schedule permits, you have the chance to Make it Yours with a Soweto Tour before getting an early night. And you'll need that early night because you have a very early start the next morning as we pick you up and drive you to Kruger, where your safari begins. This trip is a wonderful wildlife and bush experience. You go game viewing the 'old' way - on foot - though we do take you out in a safari vehicle as well, so you get the best of both worlds. You'll step back in time, following animals they way they've been tracked for thousands of years. And you'll stay in a tented camp in the heart of this magnificent wilderness, so you're immersed in the safari experience.
Each morning bush walk will be a tremendous learning experience, as you experience the wonders of nature, both big and small. Walks can last up to 4 hours and you can find yourself tracking leads and trails though thick bush, riverbeds and gullies before you return to camp more than ready for lunch! And in the afternoons we head out again - on foot and then by vehicle - stopping for sundowner drinks so you can enjoy the African sunsets, and viewing nocturnal wildlife by spotlight on our way back.
The unfenced camp is private and secluded and not open to day visitors, giving you an exclusive wilderness area for your game viewing. You will sleep in large, comfortable, walk-in tents with twin beds and all linen and towels provided, and you'll find hot (solar heated) showers and flush toilets nearby. Your experienced (armed) guide is helped by a cook and camp attendant.
Being out in the bush you won't find any electricity, although there is solar lighting, plus candles and lanterns, and of course it wouldn't be a real camping adventure without the campfire too! A cook prepares all your meals which you eat in the dining tent or under the stars before sharing stories and exciting events of the day around the campfire. Fantastic!

An average level of fitness is required. Children over 16 permitted. This trip is aimed at anyone with a sense of adventure who are happy to camp in the bush.
This trip can be taken at any time of year, though it would be more comfortable for most people from April to October. From October to March, Mpumalanga and Limpopo are hot and rainy. From April to September it is warm and dry.
If you are taking this itinerary on its own (i.e. not combining with other services) you will need to arrive and depart from Johannesburg airport. Note - if taking the shuttle bus back to Joburg at the end of the trip you should not book an onward flight till the following day. We can arrange international flights from the UK for you. You would normally leave the UK on an overnight flight the day before this itinerary and on the way back would also take a night flight arriving back in the UK the day after this itinerary.

How this holiday helps:
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre cares for wounded wildlife. Most of the animals make it back to the wild, but some have to become permanent residents.
Make it Yours experiences:
The Soweto bicycle tour is FTTSA-certified (Fair Trade in Tourism in South Africa).
Carbon Offsetting:
For every client we take on holiday we plant 10 indigenous tree saplings. This is used as a poverty alleviation and biodiversity scheme as well as helping with carbon offsetting. Click for more details …
Giving to grassroots projects:
Our registered charity, The Tribes Foundation, is currently raising funds for a project in South Africa. The kindness of strangers can make a big difference, so if you’re a travel philanthropist considering donating to a worthwhile charity, please consider backing this excellent community project.
The Calabash Trust is a charity based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It works with poor communities based in the urban townships of Port Elizabeth. While the primary focus is nutrition and education, they also engage in job creation and skills training.
We will shortly have a page with photos of the school on www.the-tribes-foundation.org.

We promise that all our Down to Earth holidays are exciting adventures as they stand. But you are an individual. ("I'm not." ed). So why not add extras to your holiday to make it different and more unique to you?
You can extend your holiday with the following short trips:
These optional extras are available to add to your trip:
Many of our holidays have been designed in relatively short sections which can be added together as a combination. Only those that work together are shown below. If there are none shown then this is not an option for the particular holiday you have chosen.
When you click on any of these holiday combination options you will be taken to the relevant holiday details. You can return to this holiday by selecting it from the menu in the left hand column. If you add more than one holiday to your basket there may potentially be a gap between the two sections. You can fill this gap by adding the handy overnight extensions we offer in the relevant city.
