Description
A vast wilderness offering fantastic wildlife viewing, Kruger is not to be missed. And there's no better way to get to know this very special place than by camping in it. But this is camping with a superior level of comfort (dare we say ‘glamping'?). Qualified guides, rather fine tents and a personal chef mean you'll experience the true nature of the Africa bush without experiencing too much personal hardship. In short, it's a rather first class adventure!
You start with a stay in a hotel in a smart suburb of Johannesburg, so you have a chance to get a good night's sleep before our early start the next morning. Then we transfer you by shuttle from Joburg Airport to Hazeyview, where you'll be picked up and driven to your camp. You spend four nights under canvas at Buffalo Rock tented camp in Greater Kruger, sleeping in good-sized walk-in tents with stretcher beds, comfortable mattresses, duvets, linen and blankets (and hot water bottles in winter!). There's no need to worry about dust baths, as the best possible portable bush showers are also provided. Lanterns light the camp at night - there's no electricity, of course. But, then, you wouldn't want the noise of a generator distracting you from those marvellous animal sounds, would you?
You will be completely cared for by the friendly and incredibly helpful camp staff and enjoy sundowners by sunset and gourmet candlelit bush dinners with local wine served under the stars. And the camp is completely private - well, apart from the nocturnal visitors such as lion and hyena.
With experienced safari guides, you have a great chance of seeing baboon, elephant, lion, cheetah, hippo, leopard, warthog, wild dog, buffalo, impala - the list just goes on and on. The park is the largest in Africa and has some 145 animals species and over 500 bird species. Your camp is set in an area of unspoilt nature, rich in bird and animal life. Being in such a game-rich area means sightings of the famed 'big five' are more likely, so there will be masses to see, with two days of early morning and evening game drives in your open-sided safari vehicle. Pack your camera and prepare to be enthralled.
With so much to see and do, you might not need anything else to occupy your spare time, but if time permits, while you're in Joburg you can always Make it Yours and see another side of South African life by taking a Soweto Tour.
Itinerary Summary
- Day 1: Arrive in Joburg, transfer to hotel in Rivonia.
- Day 2: From Joburg to Hazyview by shuttle transfer. Picked up and taken on short game drive to your camp (D)

- Day 6: If flights selected: transfer to Hoedspruit airport for flight to Johannesburg. Connect with overnight flight back to UK. If flights not selected: return to Hazeyview or to Hoedspruit for your onward journey. Option to take shuttle bus to Joburg. (B)
Detailed Itinerary
- Day 1 (Sun or Tues): Arrive at Joburg Airport. We will transfer you from the airport to your hotel at Rivonia, an affluent suburb of Johannesburg full of great shops and restaurants. If time permits you could Make it Yours with a Soweto Tour.
- Day 2: A very early start as a shuttle transfer will take you from Johannesburg to Hazyview. On arrival in Hazyview you will be driven to your camp in the Greater Kruger. This is a real bush experience with tents set up in the middle of the bush. Your tents are walk-in style with stretcher beds and hot bucket showers. Lanterns light your camp at night and dinner is prepared by your personal chef. (D)
- Days 3-5: Your days are spent game viewing in the Kruger. Your drives will be in open vehicles which means you can always get great views and photo opportunities. Most of your game viewing will be from the vehicles but guided bush walks are also offered. Your guide is an expert and will make your game viewing experience a fantastic one. Your days will generally start with an early morning game drive, followed by a big brunch and a siesta back at camp. Then you head out on your afternoon safari which usually finishes with sundowners and an evening game drive back to camp where dinner and local wine will be waiting for you to enjoy under the stars! - Day 6: If flights selected: transfer to Hoedspruit airport for the flight to Johannesburg which connects with overnight flight back to UK. If flights not selected: return to Hazeyview or to Hoedspruit for your onward journey. Option to take shuttle bus to Joburg. (B)
Is it for you?
An average level of fitness is fine for this holiday. This trip is aimed at anyone with a sense of adventure and being happy to camp in the bush. The minimum age is 8 years.
Best times to go
This trip can be taken at any time of year, though it would be more comfortable for most people from April to October. From October to March, Mpumalanga and Limpopo are hot and rainy. From April to September it is warm and dry.
Getting there
If you are taking this itinerary on its own (i.e. not combining with other services) you will need to arrive and depart from Johannesburg airport. Note - if taking the shuttle bus back to Joburg at the end of the trip you should not book an onward flight till the following day. We can arrange international flights from the UK for you. You would normally leave the UK on an overnight flight the day before this itinerary and on the way back would also take a night flight arriving back in the UK the day after this itinerary.
