Kruger, Wildlife & the Panorama Route

Description

This trip includes a short tour of the Panorama Route. one of the most beautiful destinations in South Africa. We'll make sure we show you some of the most spectacular parts, including Bourke's Luck Potholes - amazing rock formations created millions of years ago. And no taste of the Panorama Route would be complete without a chance to stand and look out from God's Window and absorb the seemingly endless view across forests and game reserves to the mountains beyond.

The highlight of this trip, however, has to be the wonderful game viewing in the Kruger National Park. From antelope to zebra, the Kruger is home to all the animals, birds and reptiles we associate with Africa including, of course, the 'big five'. With experienced safari guides, you have a great chance of seeing baboon, elephant, lion, cheetah, hippo, leopard, warthog, wild dog, buffalo, impala - the list just goes on and on. The park is the largest in Africa and has some 145 animals species and over 500 bird species. Not much can compare to watching a herd of elephants playing in the mud pools or a lazy pride of lions resting in the heat of the day. This is South Africa at its best!

Before you get to Kruger, you'll spend a night in an elegant, secluded log cabin a 400-acre private reserve, dining in the thatched dining room or around a log fire. Then we'll take you on a guided morning bush walk and on a fascinating tour of the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre to see the inspiring work being done by this non-profit organisation to care for injured animals and birds from all over the country.

For the next three nights your base for your Kruger safari adventure will be a traditional African rondavel (round cottage) set in the tropical bush garden at Sefapone. We'll keep you pretty busy, but you'll still have some free time to make use of the Misava Spa, have a drink by the pool - or even in the pool (there's a sunken bar!) - or perhaps Make it Yours and add in another safari, a sunset bush walk or a village tour.

You'll go on an evening game drive, enjoying sundowner drinks out in the bush and searching for animals by spotlight once night falls. And you'll spend a full day in the Kruger - hour after hour of fabulous wildlife viewing. You'll even view the Kruger wildlife from the water, with a boat safari along the banks of the Olifants River, amidst hippos, crocodiles and a variety of other game.

This unmissable African wildlife adventure combines well with our Cape Town and Winelands and Garden Route trips.

Kruger, Wildlife & the Panorama Route

Detailed Itinerary

  1. Day 1 (Sat or Tues: Arrive at Joburg Airport. We will transfer you from the airport to your hotel at Rivonia, an affluent suburb of Johannesburg full of great shops and restaurants. If time permits you could Make it Yours with a Soweto Tour.
  2. Day 2: A very early start as a shuttle transfer will take you from Johannesburg to Hazyview, a fantastic base for exploring the stunning Panoramic Route. This will be something of a whistlestop tour, but we couldn't resist showing off this spectacular place! Late afternoon you'll arrive at your lodge, close to the Kruger National Park. You'll spend a night in the serene elegance of Moholoholo Forest Lodge, in a 400-acre private reserve, staying in a secluded log cabin with ensuite bathroom, dining in the thatched dining room or around a log fire, and watching wildlife from your private balcony or from the verandah overlooking the waterhole. If you really skimp on the Panorama Route tour you might just be in time for an afternoon game drive - but time will be really tight, so you might decide to focus on the scenery today and start your wildlife experience tomorrow. (L,D)
  3. Day 3: Today you will have a morning guided bush walk through the reserve followed by a fascinating tour of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and a chance to learn about the wonderful work they do. In the afternoon you will be driven to your next lodge. You'll stay in a traditional African rondavel (round cottage) set in the tropical bush garden at Sefapone. Although a traditional building, your rondavel  boasts modern facilities such as aircon, ensuite bathroom, a fridge etc., plus its own verandah. Enjoy an evening safari which includes sundowner drinks and snacks, followed by a delicious BBQ dinner! (B,D)
  4. Day 4: Today is a full day of game viewing in the Kruger. Make sure you have your camera at the ready to capture those incredible wildlife sightings! (B,L)
  5. Day 5: After breakfast you will enjoy game viewing with a twist. A morning river safari gives you a completely different wildlife experience. The afternoon is free, and further activities can be arranged for you, such as an evening safari, sunset bush walk or village visit. (B)
  6. Day 6: If flights selected: transfer to Hoedspruit airport for the flight to Johannesburg to connect with the overnight flight back to UK. If flights not selected: return to Hazeyview or to Hoedspruit for your onward journey. Option to take shuttle bus to Joburg. (B)

Is it for you?

An average level of fitness is fine for this holiday. Children and families welcome. Note that November to March are the hotter months.

Best times to go

This trip can be taken at any time of year, though it would be more comfortable for most people from April to October. From October to March, Mpumalanga and Limpopo are hot and rainy. From April to September it is warm and dry.

Getting there

If you are taking this itinerary on its own (i.e. not combining with other services) you will need to arrive and depart from Johannesburg airport. Note - if taking the shuttle bus back to Joburg at the end of the trip you should not book an onward flight till the following day. We can arrange international flights from the UK for you. You would normally leave the UK on an overnight flight the day before this itinerary and on the way back would also take a night flight arriving back in the UK the day after this itinerary.

Responsible Travel

How this holiday helps:
The Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre cares for wounded wildlife. Most of the animals make it back to the wild, but some have to become permanent residents.

Make it Yours experiences:
The Soweto bicycle tour is FTTSA-certified (Fair Trade in Tourism in South Africa).

Carbon Offsetting:
For every client we take on holiday we plant 10 indigenous tree saplings. This is used as a poverty alleviation and biodiversity scheme as well as helping with carbon offsetting. Click for more details …

Giving to grassroots projects:
Our registered charity, The Tribes Foundation, is currently raising funds for a project in South Africa. The kindness of strangers can make a big difference, so if you’re a travel philanthropist considering donating to a worthwhile charity, please consider backing this excellent community project.

The Calabash Trust is a charity based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It works with poor communities based in the urban townships of Port Elizabeth. While the primary focus is nutrition and education, they also engage in job creation and skills training.

We will shortly have a page with photos of the school on www.the-tribes-foundation.org.
