Description
There are many reasons why the Cape region is so enticing - including the excellent game viewing. If you fancy following in the footsteps or pawprints of the 'big five', read on.You'll drive yourself from Port Elizabeth to the malaria-free Kariega Game Reserve. There, with two morning and two evening game drives, you've every chance of spotting lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, hippo, hyena, giraffe, zebra, eland, kudu, wildebeest, waterbuck and a wide variety of antelope. There are also lots of birds, including nesting fish, martial and crowned eagles. You'll be driven in open-top 4x4 safari vehicles, with your ranger introducing you to the widlife.
When not on safari there's no need to be idle - unless you want to be, in which case there's a swimming pool to relax by. If you really want to treat mind, body and soul, enjoy the ultimate chill-out session, with a treatment in the Wellness Centre spa. But if you are feeling energetic, river cruises, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, boating, fishing and crabbing are all available at no extra cost.
You'll stay in an airconditioned log cabin with ensuite bathrooms, spacious living room with fireplace and that all-important private viewing deck, so you can be game watching even when you're not on a game drive.
If you're not flying in for a short, sweet encounter with the African bush, a Cape Safari combines beautifully with our Garden Route or Cape Town and Winelands trips. Or you could Make it Yours and end your stay with a relaxing three nights at the beach, taking in South African marine life at gorgeous St Francis Bay.
Itinerary Summary
- Day 1: Connecting flight to Port Elizabeth (it selected). Collect hire car at Port Elizabeth and drive to Kariega Game Reserve. Settle in to Kariega Main Lodge. (D)
- Days 2 and 3: Enjoy a morning game drive and an evening game drive, relaxing in between, or taking part in the other varied activies on offer. (B, L, D)
- Day 4: Drive to Port Elizabeth. Flight to Johannesburg (if selected) and connect to night flight back to UK (if selected). (B)
Detailed Itinerary
- Day 1 (Sat): Arrive Joburg and take the connecting flight to Port Elizabeth (if flights selected). Pick up your hire car and drive the two hour route to Kariega Game Reserve. Settle in to your log cabin at Kariega Main Lodge and start to enjoy the sight of wildlife on your doorstep. You could perhaps have a dip in the pool or enjoy a spa treatment (to be booked in advance) - but we suspect the wildlife alone will keep you enthralled! (D)
- Days 2 and 3 (Sun and Mon): This is what it's all about! Depart around 6.00am for an early morning game drive and/or river cruise. Have your camera ready, but don't forget to put it down at times and just enjoy the moment. Return to Kariega Main Lodge for a hearty breakfast then relax by the pool or enjoy the activies on offer. You'll have a couple of hours free after lunch as well, before heading back out in the safari vehicle for the evening game drive, then returning to Kariega Main Lodge for dinner in the restaurant or outdoor boma. - Day 4 (Tues): Time to say farewell to the wildlife of Kariega and drive to Port Elizabeth to drop your hire car at the airport. Then you'll either fly to Jo'burg (if selected) to connect to night flight back to UK or take your onward flight. (B)
Getting there
The journey starts in Port Elizabeth. At the end, from Port Elizabeth you can fly out to Jo'burg, Cape Town, or other regional airports, and connect to homeward flights if relevant. If coming from the UK you would normally take an overnight flight via Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth the day before this itinerary starts and on the way back would also take a night flight arriving back in the UK the following day.
