Marrakech and the Atlas - Morocco

Description
This holiday gives you the best of both worlds - the bustling city of Marrakech and the magnificent landscape of the Atlas Mountains. And you explore it all on foot, getting close to nature, meeting the local people. You'll mostly stay in simple guesthouses, with very welcoming hosts, and you'll enjoy some fantastic cooking.You begin in Marrakech, famous for its old walled city (medina) of narrow alleyways of bustling souks, busy mosques and for the main square, the Djemmaa el Fna, which constantly throngs with life. We take you on a half day tour so you can get your bearings, then leave you free to explore at your own pace. You might choose to visit the city's other main sights, such as the Koutoubia Mosque, or the Saadian tombs to see the richly decorated mausoleums, with mosaics, magnificent domed ceilings, stalactite plaster work, intricate carvings and marble pillars. Or you might choose shop for anything from carpets to spices - though that might be best left until we return from trekking, as we're not sure the mules will thank you if they have too much to carry! Don't forget to head to the Djemmaa el Fna in the evening to eat and watch the acrobats, storytellers and musicians.
Then we drive you to Asni, where you meet your trek guide and those obliging mules, and the trek begins. You'll walk through Berber villages, then through oak woods to the isolated village of Tinzerte where you stop overnight in a Berber house. And you'll camp out for a night before walking along a stream before climbing up a path to Mzik Pass (2500m) before descending to Aremd village and spending a night in a gite.
Finally we return you to Marrakech, giving you more time to explore this vibrant historic city - and perhaps do that shopping? You could also wander over to Marrakech new town - more shopping - or get a horse-drawn carriage to the outskirts of town to see the beautiful Majorelle Gardens of Yves St Laurent.
If you fancy something a little more challenging, check out our Marrakech and Toubkal holiday, which takes you up Mount Toubkal rather than through the Atlas Mountains. And if you want to see even more of this region, you can extend this holiday with one of our extensions. You could choose to explore the deserts and gorges or journey to the lovely fishing port of Essaouira. Or do both!

Detailed Itinerary
- DAY 1 (Sat): If flights selected, fly from UK to Marrakech. Arrive in Marrakech. We’ll meet you at the airport and take you to your riad.
- DAY 2 (Sun): Marrakech. Today we’ll take you on a half day city tour. Your guide will give you an introduction to the city so you know how to make the best of your time here, and include some time in the souks. (B)
- DAY 3 (Mon): To the Atlas Mountains. This morning we drive to Asni where we meet up with our team and start walking through Berber villages. After Tamgounsi we have tea in a Berber house before reaching Tarabzag, then we walk through oak woods to the isolated village of Tinzerte (1300m). It’s about 5 hours walk today, and we overnight in a Berber house. (B,L,D)
- DAY 4 (Tues): Atlas walk. Today we join the River in Tassa Ouirgane and we walk along the valley with its Berber villages to our camp in Tiziane (1600m). About 6 hours walking today. (B,L,D)
- DAY 5 (Wed): Atlas walk to Aremd. We walk along the stream to Tizi Oussem (1800m) where we climb a path to Mzik Pass (2500m). It’s then downhill into Aremd village. Overnight in a gite. We walk for about 6 hours today. (B,L,D)
- DAY 6 (Thurs): Back to Marrakech. After breakfast we’ll drive to back to Marrakech (about 1½ hours). Rest of the day free to relax at your hotel or explore more of Marrakech. (B)
- DAY 7 (Fri): Time to go home. We’ll take you to the airport in time for your flight home. If flights selected, return the UK. (B)
Getting there
Royal Air Maroc has daily flights to Marrakech via Casablanca throughout the year, though many travellers choose the no-frills airlines such as Ryanair for better prices and a direct flight to Marrakech. We can arrange flights for you (we are ATOL bonded)
