Description
If you love experiencing other cultures and have a taste for the great outdoors, this part of Northern Morocco will be perfect for you! You'll get to do a lot of walking - including trekking through the Rif Mountains as mules carry your luggage - you'll get to see many aspects of Morrocan culture and history, and you'll enjoy some very good food. You'll stay in local Berber houses (simple accommodation, great hospitality) and guesthouses, and you'll come back well exercised and with a mass of wonderful memories.
Your journey starts in the walled city of Fez, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we'll take you exploring the souks, palaces, mosques and museums. Walking through the maze of narrow alleyways is like walking back in time. You'll experience sights and smells you will never forget, such as at the famous dye pits. And you'll pass through food markets, and markets for copper products, musical instruments, spices, wood carving, and many more such as the dyers' souk.
Then we drive you to a Berber village in the Rif Mountains, where you'll overnight in a simple gite before beginning your trek through this magnificent mountain range which borders the Mediterranean. For the next three days you will discover some glorious scenery, red and white rocky cliffs and green valleys, and spot wildlife such as mountain goats, gazelles, golden eagles and possibly even Barbary macaques. Your walking guide will make sure you don't miss anything, and trusty (though possibly stubborn) mules will carry your luggage.
You'll walk through the National Park of Talassemtane and head for the mountain of Tissouka (1615m), then down to Azilane, where you'll stay overnight in a rural house, enjoying excellent home-cooked food. Then you trek down to God's Bridge, a natural red sandstone arch 200' above the river, before walking to Akchour to spend the night in a mountain auberge.
Then you trek to the little Moorish town of Chefchaouen. Set against two mountain slopes, Chefchaouen is probably best known for its powder blue buildings with bright blue doors. This a lovely place, and you'll have plenty of time to explore it.
After all that walking you deserve a rest, so we'll drive you back to Fez, stopping en route at the holy site of Moulay Idriss and the Roman city of Volubilis. This is a fabulous place, once an important outpost of the Roman Empire.
